What are the benefits of aloe vera?

Aloe vera is a popular medicinal plant that people have used for thousands of years.
Aloe vera, or Aloe barbadensis, is a thick, short-stemmed plant that stores water in its leaves. It is best known for treating skin injuries, but it also has several other uses that could potentially benefit health. The cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and food industries use aloe vera extensively, and the plant has an estimated annual market value of $13 billion!
Studying the unique benefits of aloe vera can help us gain insight as to why this humble plant is beneficial not just for our nutrition, but also in the treatment of skin issues and stomach problems. Since Aloe vera contains vitamins and minerals, as well as potent hormones, enzymes, and chemical compounds, it may be used effectively to help support our health and promote wellness in a multitude of ways.

Aloe vera can be consumed orally. However, because it may cause unwanted side effects when misused, most experts recommend that people avoid using the whole fresh plant without proper guidance. Those who want to enjoy its benefits should ideally use Forever Living products that have been appropriately processed.

The following lists 11 health benefits of Aloe Vera

1. Aloe vera helps support the immune system
Scientific studies have shown that some of the chemical compounds found in Aloe vera gel may help to improve our white blood cells’ ability to fight against microorganisms. These compounds are known to make our white blood cells more capable of killing bacteria. Aloe vera gel may also help make our white blood cells more capable of damaging harmful microorganisms in the body, and making them more capable of dealing with free radicals.

2. Aloe vera helps reduce inflammation
Studies have shown that the chemical compound C-glucosyl chromone, typically found in aloe vera gel, may provide a potent activity against inflammation. This compound directly slows down the body's ability to produce hormones that cause pain and trigger inflammation.

3. Aloe Vera helps lowers blood sugar levels
People sometimes use aloe vera as a remedy for diabetes. This is because it may enhance insulin sensitivity and help improve blood sugar management. For example, a review of eight studies found that aloe vera could have benefits for people with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes due to its effects on glycemic control.

4. Aloe vera contains antioxidants and antibacterial properties
Antioxidants are important for health. Aloe vera gel contains powerful antioxidants belonging to a large family of substances known as polyphenols. These polyphenols, along with several other compounds in aloe vera, help inhibit the growth of certain bacteria that can cause infections in humans. Aloe vera is known for its antibacterial, antiviral, and antiseptic properties. This is part of why it may help heal wounds and treat skin problems.

5. Aloe vera helps reduce constipation
Aloe vera may also help treat constipation as it contains Anthraquinones which are chemical compounds that typically act as laxatives when consumed. The most widely known anthraquinone that can be found in aloe vera is Aloin. Aloin contains analgesic, antibacterial, and antiviral properties. . This time it is the latex, not the gel, that provides the benefits. The latex is a sticky yellow residue present just under the skin of the leaf. The key compound responsible for this effect is called aloin, or barbaloin, which has well-established laxative effects.

6. Aloe vera contains wholesome plant compounds
Aloe vera is known for its thick, pointed, and fleshy green leaves, which may grow to about 12–19 inches (30–50 centimeters) in length. Each leaf contains a slimy tissue that stores water, and this makes the leaves thick. This water filled tissue is the “gel” that people associate with aloe vera products.
The gel contains most of the beneficial bioactive compounds in the plant, including vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and antioxidants.

7. Aloe vera helps reduce dental plaque
Tooth decay and diseases of the gum are very common health problems. One of the best ways to prevent these conditions is to reduce the buildup of plaque, or bacterial biofilms, on the teeth.
In a mouth rinse 300 healthy people, researchers compared 100% pure aloe vera juice with the standard mouthwash ingredient chlorhexidine.
After 4 days of use, the aloe vera mouth rinse appeared to be just as effective as chlorhexidine in reducing dental plaque.
Another study found similar benefits of aloe vera mouth rinse over a 15- to 30-day period.
Aloe vera is effective in killing the plaque-producing bacterium Streptococcus mutans in the mouth, as well as the yeast Candida albicans.

8. Aloe vera helps treat canker sores
Many people experience mouth ulcers, or canker sores, at some point in their lives. These usually form underneath the lip, inside the mouth, and last for about a week.
Studies have shown that aloe vera treatment can accelerate the healing of mouth ulcers.
For example, in a 7-day study of 180 people with recurrent mouth ulcers, applying an aloe vera patch to the area was effective in reducing the size of the ulcers. In another study, aloe vera gel not only accelerated the healing of mouth ulcers, it also reduced the pain associated with them.

9. Aloe Vera accelerates wound healing
People most often use aloe vera as a topical medication, rubbing it onto the skin rather than consuming it. In fact, it has a long history of use in treating sores, and particularly burns, including sunburn.
Studies suggest that it is an effective topical treatment for first and second degree burns.
For example, experimental studies found that aloe vera could reduce the healing time of burns by around 9 days compared with conventional medication. It also helped prevent redness, itching, and infections.

10. Aloe Vera may improve skin and prevent wrinkles
There is some preliminary evidence to suggest that topical aloe vera gel can slow aging of the skin. In a 2009 study of 30 females over the age of 45, taking oral aloe vera gel increased collagen production and improved skin elasticity over a 90-day period. Reviews also suggest that aloe vera could help the skin retain moisture and improve skin integrity, which could benefit dry skin conditions.

11.  Aloe vera may help kill microorganisms
Research has shown that aloe vera contains six chemical compounds that all have potent antiseptic properties. These chemical compounds include salicylic acid, urea nitrogen, phenols, cinnamic acid, lupeol, and sulfur. These compounds found in aloe vera may have the potential to limit infection when used correctly.

When selecting hygiene products (lotions, soaps, shampoos etc.) read the labels. Look for 100% natural ingredients. If you can't pronounce the name you probably do not want to put it on your skin. Your skin absorbs what you put on it.  How the beauty industry preys on uninformed consumers to push their petrochemicals (which damage your skin and causes premature aging!)
Modern Skin Care which is mainly chemically based, brings issues with destroying the top layer of skin. Chemical peels and or other facial procedures are just some examples ruining your skin! Won't get into too much more detail as there is so much I could say! Leave you with one positive thought...

A Natural Remedy - Apple Cider Vinegar

9/28/2012

Apple cider vinegar draws out lactic acid from your muscles after exercise. A natural remedy to relieve sore muscles is to saturate a cloth with apple cider vinegar and wrap it around the sore muscle for 20 minutes. The pain should be relieved within a couple of hours.

Natural Cleansing, Skin Detox and Health Tonic

Picture
Cider Vinegar is rather strong and so is best diluted with water. Add a little honey to the mix if you find it easier to drink. If you want to neutralize the mix slightly add about a ¼ teaspoon bicarbonate of soda (baking soda). Rinse out your mouth afterwards to remove any excess acid that may cause damage to your teeth enamel in the long term. Choose a tonic mix from the recipes below and drink three times a day.

2 Teaspoons apple cider vinegar in 1 cup water (honey can be added if desired).

Dilute 1 tbs 5% ACV in a cup of hot strong green tea with 1 tbs of honey and drink this once in the morning when you get up and again just before bed.

Notes on Apple Cider Vinegar Skin Treatments
  • The smell can be unpleasant to some.
  • If you have a sensitive skin then do not apply the undiluted AVC to your skin as it will burn and irritate. Try it on a small patch of skin (maybe a pimple) to test your skin’s reaction.
  • It is important to note that all skin types react differently and acne treatments that work for some might not work for others. Apple Cider vinegar is safe to try and it may be your answer.
  • The evidence suggests that Apple Cider Vinegar is one of the best detox and health tonics for the body and a great remedy for many ailments including weight loss, acid reflux, cholesterol, constipation and heartburn among others
  • AVC is also said to work wonders for your overall health and can even help fight diseases such as osteoporosis, cancer, memory problems and aging.
If you can get used to it then taking it orally as a general health tonic is a great idea and highly recommended by many natural health experts.

Apple Cider Vinegar Cures List

Acid Reflux Syndrome
If you suffer from acid reflux syndrome you should take a little apple cider vinegar in water with each meal as it helps to prevent the symptoms and cure acid reflux syndrome.

Arthritis
One area where apple cider vinegar may be used is for arthritic pain. When using it to relieve this pain it is best used externally either by creating an apple cider vinegar poultice (dip in a mixture of ACV and water) or by soaking aching hands or feet in an ACV and warm water solution.

Athlete’s Foot
If you have athlete’s foot you can also find relief by applying either a cotton ball or cloth soaked in ACV to the foot and then allowing it to dry before putting back on shoes or socks.

Asthma
Sipping a solution of apple cider vinegar and water (approximately 1 tablespoon of ACV to a glass of water) can help to relieve the wheezing of asthma and can be repeated if necessary.

Candida
Create a douche using 2 tablespoons of ACV to 4 cups of warm water.

Cholesterol
If you have problems with high cholesterol you can get help by using the general recommended dosage of ACV with a healthy diet and lifestyle.

Coughs and Colds
1-2 teaspoons of ACV can be used in ½-1 glass of water for colds and coughs; for colds drink half a cup several times a day and for coughs drink when the throat is irritated or before meals.

Dandruff
A solution of ACV in a spray bottle of water that is sprayed onto the hair once or twice a week and then left for about fifteen minutes before rinsing thoroughly can also help to get rid of dandruff.

Diabetes
A number of studies have also shown that apple cider vinegar may be beneficial in treating diabetes and helping to lower glucose levels. Two tablespoons of ACV taken at bedtime (with water) can help reduce glucose levels by about 6% in the morning. You could also try the generally recommended dosage to help lower blood glucose levels.

Eczema
If you suffer from eczema you can use apple cider vinegar both internally and externally. Take the generally recommended dosage three times a day and then also apply diluted ACV to the skin externally.

Fatigue
Taking the generally recommended dosage of ACV three times a day, with meals, can help to relieve fatigue.

Food Poisoning
Regularly taking ACV may also help to prevent food poisoning. There are testimonies of people who drink Apple Cider Vinegar with meals and don't suffer from food poison when others who ate the same food did get the food poisoning.

Hay Fever and Allergies
Hay fever and allergy sufferers can also benefit from taking regular doses of apple cider vinegar (the generally recommended dosage.

Headaches
I haven't tried this and pain relief would depend on what is causing your headache. If you are suffering from a headache you may find it a relief to inhale ACV vapours. This can either be done by boiling ACV in water on the stove, using a vaporizer or simply inhaling from a small bottle.

Weight Loss
This is a bit of a controversial topic but apple cider vinegar for weight loss has been used for centuries. Some report amazing resulted and for others it's ineffective. The claims are that the regular dose of apple cider vinegar with your meals can help increase your metabolism and so help your body to burn more fat and calories as well as suppress your appetite naturally.

Menstrual and Menopausal Problems
Some women have found that regular dosage of ACV tonic can also be used to help alleviate symptoms of heavy and painful periods, as well as the hot flushes and sweats associated with menopause.

Apple Cider Vinegar for your Pets
Apart from being good for humans, apple cider vinegar is also good for your cats, dogs and horses. For dogs it can be used to prevent fleas and ticks, for itchy skin, smelly ears, and lack of appetite or dogs colds (watery discharge from eyes, runny nose and a coughing sound). For cats it can be used for skin problems, upper respiratory or ear infections, and itchy skin (scratching).

Apple Cider Vinegar and Your Teeth
When using apple cider vinegar cures it is important to realize that in its undiluted form ACV can harm your teeth and dental enamel. As an extra precaution, you can rinse out your mouth after drinking your ACV tonic.

Apple Cider Vinegar and Your Digestive Tract
You should never take ACV in undiluted form as the acid can harm the digestive tract. The benefits of Apple cider vinegar cures and natural remedies are quite vast but as I mentioned before it is best incorporated into a healthy lifestyle for best results.
